Things to Do in Vergennes, VT
Hey, we’re all about the occasional super-splurge of a vacation: flying someplace exotic, shelling out for the fanciest all-inclusive beachside resorts. Every once in awhile, this is just what the doctor ordered.
But we’re also all about the close-to-home getaway, a sort of regional stay-cation that lightens the load on your pocketbook and casts familiar territory in the brand-new light that comes with a kicking-back, R&R-focused approach.
If you’re a Vermonter, we invite you to come stay with us here at Basin Harbor: Our long-running resort, smack dab on Lake Champlain with a mountains-and-forest backdrop of postcard-worthy caliber, will remind you what’s so utterly glorious about the Green Mountain State.
You can happily spend an entire vacation on our sprawling resort’s grounds—equally action- and leisure-packed—but in this blog post we thought we’d spotlight some of the attractions of our nearest “city,” the charming hamlet of Vergennes. Besides the paddling, swimming, sailing, fishing, golf, hiking, etc. we deliver for that regional stay-cation of yours, the “Little City on the Falls” tempts with its own one-of-a-kind ambiance and entertainment.
Established along Otter Creek back in the late 1700s, Vergennes is named for Charles Gravier, the Count of Vergennes, a supporter of the American struggle for independence during the Revolutionary War. That’s far from the only subject of interest for history buffs: The naval fleet commanded by Thomas Macdonough that thwarted the British on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812 was built and outfitted right here.
These days, Vergennes is a regional hub of tourism and a lovely place to dip into while calling Basin Harbor to the near west your home away from home.
Vergennes comes packed with boutiques, art galleries, and other destinations ripe for retail therapy—from Linda’s Apparel and Raintree Fine Jewelry to Daily Chocolate and Vergennes Wine and Beverage.
The Vergennes Opera House
An absolute regional treasure, the Vergennes Opera House dates to 1897 and has hosted a remarkable range of performances, films, and events over its long history. It sat abandoned for decades before a grand reopening in its centennial year, and these days has as active and varied a calendar as ever before.
Vergennes Art Walk
There’s much more on tap in the cultural department in the Little City on the Falls. The fourth Friday of every month from June through September, you can sample local creativity during the Vergennes Art Walk from 5 to 7 PM. A nice outing before dinner at one of Basin Harbor’s restaurants, we’d say!
From concerts to farmers markets to citywide yard sales, the summer itinerary in Vergennes has much to delight locals and out-of-towners alike.
Sometimes the best vacation destinations lie surprisingly close to home. And when you live in Vermont—and especially anywhere near the Champlain Valley—that’s particularly true. Come stay with us at Basin Harbor this summer, and take a daytrip or two into Vergennes while you’re at it!
