The usual Fall weather is upon us, with crisp, blue-sky days ahead. A few clouds might make an appearance, but expect plenty of sunshine and lovely afternoon highs in the mid 70s. Overnight lows are likely to stay around 50 degrees this week.
Basin Harbor welcomes our guests this week, as we move into the last month of our 127th Season! We are delighted to have Mr. & Mrs. Balfour from Morristown, NJ back at the Harbor to celebrate their 10th Anniversary. The Balfours were married at BHC in 2003, and we are so happy to see them again! We welcome Mr. & Mrs. Ken Heebner from Boston, MA for the weekend, as well as David & Diana Heyer and the family from Western Springs, IL. Janette Wolff from Ste Anne Des Lacs, Quebec is here at the Harbor, and we welcome David Speranza and Kerry Bloom from Port Matilda, PA. How nice to see Mr. & Mrs. David Payne of Elkins, NH this Fall, as well as Teed Welch from Waccabuc, NY. We are pleased to have Wanda Mahoney joining us this week as the month shifts into October, and also welcome Ross Kolhonen of Peabody, MA. Thursday brings the infamous father-son team Steve Andersen and Jonathan Andersen, flying in far and wide from Bakersfield, CA and Portland, OR, respectively. Welcome to Vermont and Basin Harbor!
It’s a wedding kind of a week! Basin Harbor welcomes Katie McLoughlin from Randolph, VT and Chris Versfelt of Greenwich, CT as well as their friends and family, here to celebrate a happy union! The pair will be married on Saturday, with festivities happening all weekend. Katie and Chris met as rec staff employees here at BHC in the summer of 2002, and we’re delighted to have them back for this momentous occasion. We congratulate Kadi Sutherlin and Devin Fitzgerald from Selma, CA as we host the wedding reception for these newlyweds on Wednesday this week. Cheers to the happy couple! From Long Beach, NY we welcome Bride and Groom Kathee Yarroll and Scott Burdick and their guests for a lovely wedding ceremony and reception on Thursday this week. We are excited to welcome these lovebirds to our great state as they move to South Hero, VT, and wish them many happy years ahead. Also on Thursday BHC is delighted to host Morgan Wilcox and her guests for a festive bridal shower. Congratulations on the impending nuptials!
Fall is in the air! The leaves are changing, the day s are crisp, and the pumpkins are out! Celebrate the season with complimentary apple cider (hot or cold!) and our signature maple shortbread cookies in the Champlain Lounge from 3-5pm every day. Enjoy a fresh-picked Honeycrisp, Macintosh, or Granny Smith apple from our apple bin in the lobby, or take your own adventure to one of the nearby apple orchards to pick your own peck and partake of Vermont’s famous cider donuts. Try Shelburne Orchards just south of Burlington or Boyer’s Orchard in nearby Monkton.
The sun is a-shinin’, and Vermont is begging to show off its Autumn splendor! Visit the Nature Center below the Homestead to pick up a trail map, hiking guide, or cycling guide and get out into the beautiful countryside of the Champlain valley. While you’re at the Nature Center, take a gander at our displays about geology, Lake Champlain shipwrecks, the legend of Champ, edible plants, and more!
Basin Harbor’s Blue Chair Day Spa is available on a limited basis this time of year, but we’d love to book a treatment for you! Our masseuse Patti will be available every day with the exception of Tuesday for a variety of massages, and Michelle will be available for manicures and pedicures on Thursday. Book your pampering appointments with the concierge!
Enjoy a Narrated Cruise on Lake Champlain aboard The EScape! Sign up with the concierge for our daily cruise and learn all about the wonders and historical significance of our beloved lake. Sunday holds an extra special opportunity, as the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum hops on board to help you explore a shipwreck at the bottom of the lake using an ROV.
The Breezeway Gift Shop in the lobby will be open from 8:30am-Noon on Mon-Thurs and 8:30am-5:00pm on Friday and Saturday. Be sure to stock up on souvenirs, BHC merchandise and other goodies for your trip back home!
Do a good deed by enjoying a meal at the Red Mill! On Thursday, October 3, you can Share the Harvest and help limited-income Vermonters, a benefit organized by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA). Proceeds from your lunch or dinner at the Mill on this day will help purchase a season’s worth of fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farmers to be distributed to local families.
The last weekend of September brings all manner of fun to Basin Harbor! Join us on Friday night for our S’Mores Bar and campfire on the Sunshine Lawn at 8pm. Come by and practice your marshmallow charring techniques. Then visit the Red Mill afterwards for DJ Charlie’s Karaoke Extravaganza! On Saturday, Charlie is back to host your late-night dance party. Sample a fine selection of local brews on tap, including Switchback, Fiddlehead IPA, Basin Harbor Ale and Shed Mountain Ale. For a seasonal sip, try Shipyard Pumpkin Ale.
Quote of the Week:
“Ho! For the leaves that eddy down, crumpled yellow and withered brown, hither and yonder and up the street and trampled under the passing feet; swirling, billowing, drifting by, with a whisper soft and a rustling sigh, starting aloft to windy ways, telling the coming of bonfire days.”
~ Grace Strickler Dawson
