Timeless Charm of Basin Harbor’s Historic Cottages

Since 1886, Basin Harbor Resort has welcomed guests to our picturesque lakeside haven, offering an unforgettable blend of history, charm, and modern comfort. Among the most beloved features of our resort are the historic cottages, each with its unique story and character. As we look back through the decades, these cottages stand as a testament to the enduring allure of Basin Harbor.

A Glimpse into the Past

Our historic cottages have witnessed countless family vacations, romantic getaways, and memorable gatherings. They have been preserved to maintain their vintage appeal while offering the modern amenities our guests expect. The Beach Family has worked hard for over a century to maintain the property and remain stewards to this day.

The Early Days: A Lakeside Retreat

The story of Basin Harbor’s cottages begins in the late 19th century when Ardelia Beach and her husband, FM Strong, first opened their doors to weary travelers seeking respite by the shores of Lake Champlain. The original cottages were simple, rustic, and designed to offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Vintage photographs from this era capture the essence of a simpler time, where nature and relaxation were paramount.

The Roaring Twenties: Elegance and Expansion

As the resort grew in popularity, the 1920s brought a wave of expansion and refinement. New cottages were built, each boasting unique architectural details and a touch of elegance. These charming retreats became a favorite among guests, who returned year after year to enjoy the serene beauty of Basin Harbor. The addition of modern conveniences, such as indoor plumbing and electricity, marked a significant transformation while preserving the quaint charm of the original structures.

Mid-Century Modern: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

The mid-20th century saw further enhancements as Basin Harbor continued to evolve. Cottages were updated to include contemporary furnishings and amenities, blending tradition with innovation. This period was marked by a sense of nostalgia, with many families establishing long-standing traditions of summering at Basin Harbor. The cottages became a home away from home, cherished for their comfort and familiarity.

Today: Preserving Heritage, Embracing Modernity

In the present day, Basin Harbor’s historic cottages continue to enchant guests with their timeless appeal. Each cottage has been lovingly maintained and updated to ensure a perfect balance of historic charm and modern luxury. From cozy one-bedroom retreats to spacious family accommodations, our cottages cater to a variety of preferences and needs. Guests can enjoy the vintage aesthetic, complete with original woodwork and period-appropriate decor, while benefiting from today’s modern conveniences such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and a full service resort.

A Legacy of Memories

The cottages at Basin Harbor are more than just accommodations; they are a living legacy of memories and traditions. Families return year after year, drawn by the allure of these historic accommodations and the promise of new adventures. As you stroll through our picturesque property, you can almost hear the echoes of laughter and the footsteps of generations past.

We invite you to experience the magic of Basin Harbor’s historic cottages for yourself. Whether you’re a returning guest or visiting for the first time, our cottages offer a unique blend of history, charm, and comfort that will make your stay truly unforgettable.

Champ Sighting

Legends of Champ have lived long before Lake Champlain had its name. The Abenaki and the Iroquois have their own legends about a large creature inhabiting the lake, which looked like a large, horned serpent or giant snake. By 1992, over 600 people claimed to have seen Champ all over the lake. Local lore insists Champ lives across the lake from Basin Harbor in underwater caves beneath the Palisades. Pennie shared that “several staff members and guests have seen Champ over the years. Curiously, most sightings have been during cocktail hour”. Have you had a Champ sighting?
